Throbshaw Point, Heysham, HW, day 11/2/19
Amazing transformation after the gales. Sunshine and a gentle breeze - a fabulous day to be out by the sea.
Needed some worms so walked out in waders to the low water mark and put two rods out without much expectation while I teased a few - a very few - worms from their cosy holes. One was an absolute whopper, though.
Nothing doing on the rods, though, apart from one tenacious crab.
The tide comes in at a slow walking pace here, so I didn't do a lot of backing up and headed for the rocks.
Dismayed to find a pile of newspaper someone had left from the night shift. Then less cross when I discovered it contained a dozen or so leftover black lug. Just what I needed. I had a leisurely lunch waiting for the tide to catch up. The delay also gave me the chance to size up the rough round north of the rocks that I fancied chucking a big hook into later.
Spent the first hour or so watching squadrons of birds fly past. What are they? Must have been a thousand of them.
An hour before high, the trickle of small codling and whiting began - 8 in all.
Then at the top of the tide a most unusual winter arrival - a decent sized plaice. First of those I've seen in a while.
Weed was annoying but manageable. Fished a single 3/0 with black and squid on the rough ground, and a 2-hook flapper size 1 baited with black and mack/squid tips. Caught on all of them, though the lug/squid did best. The 2 codling caught on the 3/0 on rough ground were no bigger than the others. A fine day to be out. And that plaice gave a hint of spring.
