Re: Boat Reel
Most anglers tend to use multiplier rods & reels for boat fishing, for example, I use an Daiwa Team 12-20lb boat multipiler rod coupled with an ABU 7000.
But if you have a fixed spool rod it depends on what size your rod is, and what your target fish is. For example, if you have say a standard 12-20lb rod, I would go for a Shimano or Daiwa fixed spool reel around the 4000 size. Then spool it up with 17lb, 18lb, or 20lb mono - or braid. If your rod is a lighter rod, say a 6lb-12lb rod, then I would go for a Shimano or Daiwa reel arond the 3000 size, and spool this up with say 10lb or 12lb mono.
If you're unsure as to what size your rod is, and what size reel would match it, you should take your rod to a reputable tackle shop - say Gerrys of Morecambe - who, I'm sure, would be glad to advise.
I hope this helps.
But if you need more specific advice, can you tell me what rod you have, and the size?

Re: Boat Reel
It's for use with an uptide rod rated 4-8oz
It's rung for fixed spool.
I find it easier to cast when in a cluttered charter boat.
I've been using a cheap beachcasting fixed spool but want something a bit smaller and better quality

Re: Boat Reel
My advice would be to go for Shimano or Daiwa fixed spool reel about 4000 size.
Having said that, most uptiders are ringed for a multiplier reel, and therefore have smaller rod rings. In this case and ABU 7000 sized reel would be more appropriate, since you need to match the reel to the rod.
