Sakuma Manta Hooks

Re the hound I beached at Starr Gate (15/07/18), I forgot to mention that when I finally went to unhook the fish, the rig just came away in my hand. I thought at that moment how lucky to have managed to beach the fish before it spit out the hook.
However, on a closed look, my Sakuma Manta 1/0 hook had snapped and I could easily have lost the fish at any stage of the retrieval.
I've used Sakuma Manta hooks for a long time and now that's the 3rd occurrence over the last 10 years that I've had it happen to me, so no more Sakumas as they are too brittle and I always use new hooks for ever session.

Any suggestions on a decent sharp/strong hook brand would be welcome?

Mike.

I have noticed the same problem with mantas. I use Sakuma Phantoms 4s up to 1/0s. Bigger hooks for Smoothie/Bass/Cod, Mustad Viking Ultra Point (very strong hooks) :thumb:

Had the same problem when fishing for hounds. Managed to pull a 4/0 out of snag with 16lb line and the hook snapped at the bend.. Sakuma 470 Top gun are strong and could pull in a bus tho and I've moved onto these whilst fishing for hounds

Another vote for the Sakuma top guns :fishing:

Very strong and very sharp , lovely pattern for using with crab and nicely offset

I've had a look at both the 'Top Gun' and the 'Viking Ultra Point', and both are strong hooks. However, my preference is going towards the Ultra Points purely on the longer shank length.
Many thanks for the inputs, Mike.

Used sakuma top gun hooks this year Mike for the hounds, various sizes 1.0 2.o and 3.o very strong hooks and better hook ups .crab bait presentation is also good.
