Not been fishing for a while and when I have I have only caught undersized fish, so with it being my birthday last week and having got a new Daiwa fishing box (from Gerry's) with rucksack attachment for my birthday it would have been rude not to go out.

It was slightly sad to be setting out without my trusty old fishing box seat that I have had for over 30 years

(Enjoy your retirement old friend!)

But the strap had broken last trip out and it was a heavy old thing.

Got to the North Gare at 2:00pm and the sea looked perfect, a good swell on, but not too much to make it dangerous, and the tide coming in. I set up in as much shelter as I could out of the biting wind cast out two rods, both with single hook pulleys one with frozen black and the other with sandeel and waited!

Due to the wind and the waves, bites were hard to detect and when i reeled in to check my baits I had a small fish finger sized codlet on the sandeel and a dab on the black lug.

My bag of sandeels then blew into the sea on one strong gust so I was left with just black lug. By 4:00pm the wind had started to drop a little as it changed direction and I started to get good bites, could they be Cod? I thought. I missed a couple of bites then connected with something with a bit of weight it soon came to the surface, a nice Codling of 2lb 12oz

It was soon followed by another of 2lb 2oz and I then lost a couple of, what felt like good, fish that dropped off. With high tide approaching the fishing quietened down. I was visited by a little Turnstone which I fed bits of discarded bait and just as it got to high tide two porpoises came past within 20 yards of me. they came back about 20 minutes later too. After high tide I started to get little bites again and caught three shore rocklings in quick succession and then a decent whiting before I called it a day and headed back to Brompton on Swale (Home)

Enjoyable session, used my marine tracker app to find out what all the ships were that I was seeing coming up the Tees, and finished up with 2 codling , 1 codlet, 3 shore rocklings, 1 dab and 1 whiting. Oh! and the fishing box was excellent and comfy to carry on my back!
