I'm not sure if members are aware (I certainly wasn't) but there's been an ongoing consultation with the public and stakeholders regarding the future development of Morecambe and it's facilities.

One possibility was looking into the needs of users of the beaches and shorefront at Morecambe.

I believe one of the subjects of the consultation was about the sea front/beaches and what improvements could be made. I know Morecambe Dinghy Angling Club have made their voice heard at a recent meeting, along with the yacht club.

As of yet I believe there is no voice for the RSA (Recreational Sea Anglers) to give their opinions to the body.

All parties who have a vested interest in the seafront should have a chance to put their case forward. However, meetings & consultations have been taking place since 2011 and it is possible that RSA have the missed the boat in making their opinions heard.

The obvious one for the local shore angler would be the lack of venues available due to the proliferation of the rock armour in reality, the north wall is the only untouched venue in the vicinity.
I have suggested previously that one answer would be to dump tonnes of shingle onto the rock armour which would make the shoreline more accessible for people in general, including anglers. Surprisingly, this is one option that I think may have already been discussed and is possibly looked upon favourably!

If anyone has any sensible/feasible suggestions which may form part of a proposal from RSA, please post them on this thread, it's in all our interests to make our voice heard (if it isn't too late) and put together some form of proposal which would go some way to improve Morecambe venues for anglers.

I would be grateful, if there is not already an representative in place, if I could be recognised as the representative of Recreational Sea Anglers (RSA) for the Morecambe & Heysham area.
I am co-administrator of the Angling Addicts website which currently has close to 500 members, many of which either reside in the local district or travel to Morecambe to use the current facilities available to anglers. We obviously have an interest in any proposals in the MAAP regarding the use of the beaches & seafront, and hopefully improvements to the current venues available to anglers.

As you are no doubt aware, Morecambe has two highly regarded and much visited tackle shops (Gerrysfishing on Parliament Street & Morecambe Angling Centre on Thornton Road), and these are a catalyst for bringing RSA into the area to spend time & money in the local economy. The RSA would be grateful if you would recognise the contributions RSA make to the local economy and would very much like to have our voice heard in the consultation

It would be nice to have a voice in this matter. Wether its listened to is a different story. I find the angler has little say in anything now even tho angling is the biggest pasttime in the country.

i've always wondered if small angling pods could be created in the rock armour of the jetty, Grosvenor, Battery car park etc.

an infill of concrete to create a short and safe walkway with a safety railing at the end would be ideal. The pods could be made wide enough for 3 or 4 rods and some could be designated and adapted for disabled anglers. Made safe to encourage children to take up a sporting recreation. Pod competitions, Top Pod of the week, Pod sponsored by Gerry's?!! .............. got me going now!

I don't think they would greatly alter the look of the armour nor would they compromise their wave deflecting purpose. As Morecambe Bay is one of the most important feeding grounds for sea birds, I'm sure we could encourage our friendly Twitcher friends to support the idea? They use them when the tide is out, and us when it's in!

I think the time has gone when people will come to Morecambe for entertainment (Blackpool has this and we'll never compete). We should make the most of what's there already - The Bay, the views and the wildlife. I visited North Berwick a few years ago. They have done this and have the Scottish Seabird Centre on the shore - cafe, gift shop education and webcams on the wildlife. major attraction and tastefully done. Why doesn't Morecambe make the most of what it already has?

We may be too late for the consultation, but its got to be worth a try!!

Love Baitdiggers comments, this area is blessed with some great wildlife AND birdlife. We always try to combine the two whenever we ( oldies) go out. Also like the sound of walkways to the pods..?? That would be great as some of us have the ability to trip over a matchstick without really trying..!! Good fodder here for Councillor Rushworth maybe..?

Fantastic post mate, that's exactly the sort of ideas we need to put forward as a proposal

Personally, my choice would be the shingle, but that could be a pipe dream due to costs (I've no idea how much tonnes & tonnes of shingle would cost) or it may not be suitable to be used near a slipway for instance. Your pod idea would come into its own in these areas, and cost wise might be a much more viable idea anyway.
