Throbshaw Point, Heysham, night/day 10/6/19

Intended to fish the afternoon's high tide off the Stone Jetty - an easy stroll that would have been kind to my dodgy knees - but then saw showers forecast and opted instead to stumble over rocks for the early morning high. Light winds, dawn high tide - basstastic!

"The darkest hour is just before dawn"

My second error of judgement was to drop my headtorch among seaweed and boulders while looking for crabs. The impact knocked the switch off and the rising waters were already lapping around my wellies. Eventually found it down a crevice guarded by a boss crab. Eagerly cast out two rods baited with peeler and lug/squid for a 2.5hr up/down session that would surely net a king's ransom in silver.

"Morning has broken like the first morning"

It was a cool night, with a north-east breeze. I'd togged up in winter kit - 2 pullovers, ski jacket, long-johns, padded gloves, woolly hat - and was still a tad chilly.

"Here comes the sun, doo-doo-doo-doo.
Here comes the sun
And I say it's all right."

Fours hours later, I'd landed nothing but several hundredweight of weed. Then finally a tiny twitch yielded a tiny bass. Smallest I've ever seen. A bit like the perch we used to catch in the canal.

If that was one of Rachmaninov's famously enormous hands, the bass would be a three-pounder, but it ain't, so it's not.

And that was that. Nuts.
