Three Days on the Gynn
Well after fishing the match last Sunday and seeing smoothounds being caught it was back down there Monday morning.
When we got down there good swell and overcast so did not necessarily bode well for the smoothounds or the sole.
Bait was black, rag, peeler and mackerel. Three rods set up one at distance fishing peeler on up/over rig and the other at mid distance and close in fishing flappers.
Quite for the first hour and Tope pup appeared on the flapper rig taking rag.
Next up was a decent sole on black
Had another tope pup on crab at distance and then close in a flounder on rag
Finally a very small plaice close in again on rag
So back down there yesterday morning and if anything bigger swell than monday but you have to try - same set up and bait and we were off
Again nothing for the first hour and then just out of the backwash close in a sole on rag
Next up at distance a tope pup on crab
This one was followed by three of his mates all the same size (32cm) and all on crab at distance.
Then just after high sole at mid range on rag
By this time the sea had dropped and looked OK for the ebb
Nothing at distance but another sole hour and half into ebb close in on rag
Had another sole last cast again close in on rag , so ended up with 4 sole and 4 tope pups.
So still without the elusive smoothound and with bait left it was the fourth session on the bounce and back down there this morning.
Conditions seemed perfect with flat calm sea and colour in the water so must have a chance and if nothing else the sole would still be about wouldn't they?
Again nothing happened in the first hour and then small flounder close in on rag
As I was sorting the flounder out, turned round to see the distance rod horizontal on the wall (who hadn't loosened the clutch ) garbbed the rod and a good weight got it within 30 yards of the wall when it ran north and over the steps and threw the hook
While I was still sulking had a tope pup at mid distance on rag
then on the next cast thought it was another tope pup on urfe rig but no it was smoothound pup on rag so right species but not the size I wanted
That was it used the bait up 2 hours into the ebb but on the best looking day the worst fishing and the hunt goes on for a decent smoothound
