The Great North Wall 13-4-13

North Wall 13-4-12 11:30am to 16:00pm HW 13:55ish

Bait used: Rag, Fresh Black and Red Lug

After the excitement of Anglesey, harry and Nick (my youngest two sons) wanted to do some more fishing, so we decided to go to Morecambe. We were going to fish the Golf club on Friday, however, we ended up at Lightwater Valley - where there was no fishing allowed from the swan pedaloes, but the rides were fun. So it was on Saturday morning that we set off for Morecambe.

Before fishing the obligatory stop of at Gerry's was carried out and bait was purchased, then it was off to Aldi for some supplies and a quick (but within the speed limit) drive along the prom to see what was happening. There were a few fishing the low tide, but after a quick vote we decided to try the Great North Wall.

We arrived at approx 11:30 and set up camp just past the offices at the first turning area. Harry and Nick were using flattie/bass rods and I was using my diawa emcast beachcaster. Harry and Nick both went for 3 hook flappers (size 1) and 90g grip leads. Harry started with blow lug and nick with rag, whilst I used fresh black. We settled down for the wait.

Whilst waiting, I had a quick tidy up of rubbish left by others, not too much so maybe word is getting round to take your rubbish home!

There were a few others fishing the wall further along

About 10 minutes in harry had a bite, but no fish, he rebaited and whilst doing this I decided to check my bait and notice a bit of weight on. Up came a flattie, a nice little plaice of about 30cm

Then Harry had a small flounder

Closely followed by Nick with a slightly larger Flounder.

All was a bit quiet now coming up to high tide so i went for a wander to see what everyone else was catching. The omens were not looking good with only a few small flatties being caught. I met Big S, who was fishing with a young lad who had had two small flatties.

Looking back along the wall, I noticed Harry frantically waving to me. I ran (well more like quickly ambled) over to find he had a flounder stuck on the wall. I helped him free it

and Nick was now also reeling in a flounder,
which had taken two hooks, one with blow lug and the other rag. At this point Frank (Bill Bodger) wandered over for a chat. Amongst other things we discussed bass and how the warmer weather could bring the crabs on and so the bass in maybe a week or two?

Frank went back to his rods. Shortly after Nick was reeling in again. He said he had another fish on and it was a bit heavier. As it broke the surface, it didn't look much like a flattie...that was because it was a little bass of 35cm

Nick insisted that we took it down to show Frank that the bass were about and then we set it free.

From then on it was flounders and dabs - Nick had taken to "blessing" his worms in the hope that this would catch him another bass. It didn't quite work but he was catching regular dabs and flounder.

To round things off, I finished with a double header of Dab.

Final scores:
Nick: 1 bass, 3 flounder and 3 dab
Me: 1 plaice, 2 flounder and 3 dab
Harry: 2 flounder and 2 dab

All in all a good day, in the warm and nice to chat with a few others on the wall.
