Perch rock. Round one. 15/08/17.
..PERCH ROCK. ROUND ONE. 15/08/17..
It looked like a perfect night for another bash at the perch again
i nearly had the whole beach to myself but then two others came down to my left and right
i don't think they had much or any luck
but an interesting night was in store for me.
So i got set up and baited up and then cast in
after 10 mins i got a small knock then another knock
as the fish came to the waters edge i sure a small starry smooth hound
and with what looked like an even smaller one on the bottom hook
but this looks difrent and on closer inspection
i sure it was mersey gold dust a baby tope pup
and i was very happy about that.
No sooner had i put the fish back in the water
and cast back in knock knock again and a small thornback ray came out
this was quickly followed by a Dab.
Then my other rod had a better knock and a good pull down
and a better sized common smooth hound was landed.
After that it seemed to slow down a bit
but i still managed 2 dog fish
and another Dab.
Then things went a bit bonkers haha
so i get a small knock again on my rod and i am reeling it in
then i here a crash i turn around and see my rod stand on the floor
and my rod making its way to the waters edge
so i throw my other rod down and run to grab it
knocking over my tackle box in the process
i just managed to grab the butt of the rod
as it was now half in the surf i picked it up and set the hook
then i feel a good fish on the other end
and i then realise this fish was now on a Dab rig with a size 4 hook now in its mouth
so i now had to play this fish real gently and give it no slack line at all
as it got to the waters edge i sure it was a real good sized hound
and as soon as i picked it up
the hook fell straight out of its mouth.
Then i look back and see carnage my gear is everywhere all over the beach
and i am now also wrestling with a large starry smooth hound
trying to get a picture on the timer
and it definitely wanted to go back home.
Certainly a PB for me it measured in at 135cm
i had no scales with me tonight
but it had no problem with it being around the 15lb mark minimum
the pictures don't do it justice really
but it had to go back.
And the lesson of the story is
always set your drag on your reels after every fish
when the hounds are about.
