Not havin it...

Went to Ghyll Head with Bazzer today, warm night, odd shower but good forecast..Scenery gorgeous now in our Lakes, and improving every day... Water looked great with fish moving from a distance...
Image
Parked at the south basin end and rigged up...
Image
Wandered down to the waters edge and made a start ... Baz I think on a pheasant tail and a small GRHE. Me..? Whisker to start, get me an early fish so I can relax and enjoy the rest of the session.....
Ha.. In yer dreams... Never had a touch all morning..!! Tried most colours, went from big and ugly to fine and subtle but nothing..!! Frustrating thing was the fish were right in front of me, gently rolling and topping off in some numbers..?? But it became obvious they weren't feeding... Baz had one fish behind me, but he too struggled ? And if he's struggling.... He moved round to my right in the north bank putting out a good line
ImageImage
Best bit of the day was (sadly...) the aerial bombardment we had ? Two prop trainers buzzing the lake, and near the end amid a tremendous din a flock of geese some 60 or so came swooping in from the dam end..
Image
Usual buzzards etc, woodpeckers to keep the interest, but no fish... Could make all sorts of excuses, but just one of those days when they didn't want the fly... Day was rounded off however by a slow drive home through some fabulous views round Winster, Crosthwaite over Scout Scar, and back to sunny Natland. Whereupon my raspberry plants got raided by a hungry Bazzer..!! Always the great craic, plan formulated for Thursday.......???

Quite agree that does look a very scenic spot to go fishing, pity nuffin for your troubles though.

I had a similar experience last week went to a local lake on the Ringwood club ticket
it was stunning all covered in trees and vegetation with small islands and lillies around it
then I see a humungues great buzzard flapping its wings between the trees as there was no air
it was working hard to stay in the air..........any road......a while later 2 moor hens crept out of the
rushes and headed across the lake.......this bluddy Buzzard swoops down and trys to take one but they
submerged to get away...geeeeeze it had to flap like stink to get itself airborn again....never in my life seen anything like it ...shows what hunger will do I guess.

I've seen your recipes Gazza. You don't go hungry :D

On a serious note I've seen late daphnia migrations and caenis hatches at the end of similar seasons. One method ( pre the blob) was a stripped peach rabbit mini lure for the daphnia. Colour can be key for rainbows. Depth for brownies. Funnily enough a blob of tippexed epoxy on a Drennan super specialist 18 dead drifted between a similar sized pair of white CDC f flies did well for caenis. On the other hand you've got to love the days that make you think and show you that you are human :thumb:

Well, between us I think we tried most of the options? Baz generally goes for the "natural" approach, and I'll try the lure/colour thing... Does get you thinking Liphook and makes for a challenge next time out..! We had a pair of buzzards overhead as we set up, one quite scruffy ? Youngster we assumed, plus some birds we couldn't identify ...??? And on the way back enjoyed the Cumbrian tradition of being stuck in a country lane as the farmer moved his cows from field to field... Top morning out !!!
