Braid spool to lip dimension is much shallower. The thickness of the braid means less depth is needed to fill with an adequate amount of braid.

Hope this helps

I agree-my 850 blew up within a few weeks, the replacement lasted about 8 months, not heavy duty use either.
Having said that the Surfblaster runs unbelievably sweetly, try the Pep*i challenge with a £150 Shimano, without looking at the reel stickers the Penn feels £100 dearer,if you get my meaning). If its as good inside as the retrieve feels to be then Penn have stepped up and it could really take some busines off Shimano at the price point.
The Penn 525s are in another league to the F/S reels going back a generation but the latest gen seems to have raised the bar a long way on quality, just remains to be seen how those gears stand up. I'd buy one on feel but for the confidence knock like BB said
