Hound hunting in the rain.
Easington 17th May 2017 Hi water 2158hrs 4.8m
Having just finished a run of 4 shifts the last 2 being nights I had decided to go use the crabs I’ve had tanked for the last month. My destination was to be Holmpton & my target a smooth hound. A quick check of the diaries told me it was as good a time as ever to target them as I had caught several hounds around this date and tide over the past 4 years or so. The day in question started out with a 12 ½ cycle I do after my night shift. Unfortunately ½ way home the heavens opened and I looked like a drowned rat by the time I got back to my car. Plan as to sleep till 1200hrs then head off and fish 4hrs up to top of tide. When I woke up it was obvious that the rain was not stopping for anyone. So I put plan B into action ‘Easington’ this was because I did not want to be clambering up & down muddy cliffs in the rain and the dark.
I arrived on time and was set up and in the water by 1715hrs. There were 2 lovely deep holes in my arc of fire well within anyone's casting rang from the high water mark.
I wasn't really expecting much for the 1st couple of hours as history has told me that it switches on around 3-2 hrs before high water. The 1st couple of casts produced nothing, and the rain was relentless. I was soon into the dogs of which some where rather large so I weighed on of them which took my scales to a nice 2lb5oz a new PB LSD for me.
Honey not looking to happy lol
I must say recently I purchased a new reel in the form of a PENN Fathom 15 and had it magged by John Owens. I must say an impressive reel and the mag allows it to be proper lashed out.
I was being swamped by LSD’s no matter how far or what bait I sent out. That with the ever persistent rain I had decided to call it a day an hour earlier than anticipated. However in famous BigBadCol style on what was to be my last cast I pulled in a very welcome Bass.
It measured just short of 55cm I didn’t weigh it as it looked slightly smaller than my PB bass
I had 1 more chuck with each rod and again pulled in the LSD’s.
A wet and frustrating session with a bonus bass thrown in so happy overall. Bait used sand eel, squid bluey & peeler.
Rigs used fixed pat & dropper.
As always a little video underneath of the days antics.
