Going tropical at the 5 Bar Gate
Chalk and cheese. 4th February so cold that fresh bait was frozen before you could use it. 14th February, it's almost shirt sleeve order ! So with the weather well sorted it was the first outing of the year for the continental rods to look for early 'flatties'. With only a 7.4m tide the venue was the 5 bar gate at LW. It was going to be a "Find the fish" exercise.
Having said that, I didn't have to look too far and it was fish from the off, with a double header (codling and whiting) to get the ball rolling. Nothing too big and really welcome.
And so it continued. Almost a fish a cast on frozen black and the odd fresh that I managed to pump between bites. I think it's fair to say that the fish didn't seem fussy.
When the tide really started making, the gulley I was having all the fish from, became unattainable without getting the waders in some deep, nut chilling water and the increasing sea state put the nail in the coffin.
Finally a dab, one of the target species
Finished the day with 10 whiting , three codlets and a single dab. (So much for the flattie hunt )
It was just nice to get out there, whilst the sun was out and the temperature +10
Positively tropical !
