Dorset Stour 13th March

Postby skatenchips » 17 Mar 2017, 10:50

After a quick walk down the end of the FREE section of the Longham bridge stour spot the wier was heaving through so the 2.5lb specialist rod with 3oz feeders stuffed with 2oz of mashed bread and large flake bait would be deployed into a small back eddy on the other side...trouble was every other cast no matter how high I had my rod set up the boily water would wash the rig past me....wooooooooosh....so I enjoyed it when I was fishing where I wanted....it was uptide fishing of a type really so tip well set waiting for it to spring back.......

beachcaster style fishing has its merits when needed...............

Image

god I luv these old 5000 shimano reels, still ultra smooth all these years later.

Image

the tip pinged back and I'm playing a fish in the wild water, only 3lb 3oz but felt so much bigger with the water pressure pounding down on it..........

Image

missed a few bites then had this fish of 4lb on the nose I've had this fish before with its split tail fin...still in great condition though and nice to see it again.

Image

sorry to say that was it,just the 2 chub but nature always plays a part with a day out on the river bank for me

and I had this white egret sitting on the weir sill munching on what ever swam passed....I'm afraid my hand held cam isn't up for distance piccies.........

so the 13th of march gave me an enjoyable afternoon on the Dorset Stour.

Nice to see a different type of tactic on a running river Gazza, cracking Chub, and nice shot of the Egret. Get quite a few of them sitting on the shore at Sandside when I go flatty fishing...
Great read again.

Nice report Gazza and two nice fish :thumb:

I know the spot well, and a bit further down stream is Manor Farm, another place I liked to fish.

Good barbel and chubb used to be in the stretch from the water works, good sized pike in the bay at Manor Farm.

I miss it mate.

I totally agree nature is a big part of getting out fishing. Nice pics.

Yes I was fishing the weir it being the last peg along that stretch below the water works you spoke of....

I didn't mention but behind the fields are quite a few of our traveling folk and around 17.30pm their kids arrived en masse and started a bomb fire up wind that fecked me off,i can't shut me mouth and suggested they ....do one......its amazing how such young cherubs know only to well how to F and C back at you.....of course I thought id have dads and uncles on me case so made life easy and went home....

the second thing is that same stretch has been hammered by our European visitors and the pike chub and barbel have been bagged and taken home for their suppers....real shame as I like that bit of water.

Another great read and angling G :thumb: I totally agree about the old style 5000s. I got wind that they were due to be 'improved' and bought a few. Shimano ruffled a lot of feathers when they cleared stocks to Argos in the form of two spool 'Special Edition' REs. When you took the VAT into account they were selling them for less than average tackle dealers could buy them for!
My heart sinks when I hear of plundered stocks on our magnificent waters :banghead: Bring back the gallows!

Water Works was always Wimborne Angling Club or day ticket and the barbel were big and plentiful in there. Not sure if that has changed?

After the bridge was anyone with a rod (or similar) it seemed, pity EA Bailfiffs didn't hit that short length, having said that how do you get fines from travelers?

Pity really but it seemed then it was just that short length opposite side to the water works that was so easy for anyone to get to. Sad you had to pack in but understandable I think.

I was looking at some of Wimborne Angling Club lakes online the other day, quite a few changes although they still have Kingsbridge lakes, looks like they lsot Tower Lake some time ago, that was a belting lake. Christchurch Angling Club also seems to have changed a lot but they still have some of their massive lakes.

Good report though Gazza. :thumb:
